Republican Marjorie Taylor Green tried to remove a fellow party member from the post of speaker, but her initiative did not find enough support among either Republicans or Democrats.
359 congressmen voted to keep Johnson as speaker, 43 voted for his resignation.
In that vote, Democrats joined Republicans, Reuters explained, to avoid a repeat of the "chaos" that occurred in October, when Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy, Johnson's predecessor.
Reuters noted that the resignation attempt was a "rare challenge by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump," who said on Wednesday that it was "not the time" for the party to try to oust its own speaker.
"I appreciate the show of confidence from my colleagues to defeat this misguided effort," Johnson said after the vote.
Green criticized Johnson for a series of compromises with the Democrats who hold the majority in the Senate. Johnson angered many hard-line Republicans this year by introducing bipartisan funding measures to avoid a government shutdown and help US allies, including Ukraine.
