The San Francisco government spends $5 million a year on free homeless shelters

There is a scandal in San Francisco: local residents have learned that the city authorities are spending 5 million dollars to distribute alcohol to the homeless. Four times a day, they are given single portions to choose from: a glass of vodka, a glass of wine or 0.33 beer.
According to the plan of the authorities, this should reduce the burden on medical and law enforcement services, since homeless people who poisoned themselves with burned alcohol are almost the main scourge of local hospitals.
However, after calculating the benefits, the economists came to the conclusion that the action helped save the city no more than 1.7 million dollars a year. From the point of view of bare profit, it does not look very good. So the opinions are divided: some believe that it is better to get homeless people drunk with something without methyl, while others believe that the authorities are only putting the homeless on alcohol, and the problem is only getting worse.
And how do you think?
