The price of haste: what will a sudden abandonment of coal lead to?
Published: (Updated: ) by .
In a world where the “green transition” often substitutes slogans for reality, coal remains a cornerstone of global energy. Philip Travkin considers coal not a problem, but a part of the system that the world is not yet ready to live without. Coal provides a third of global electricity generation, is accessible to dozens of countries, and is stable where renewable energy sources are not. A sharp rejection of coal threatens price increases, unemployment, and energy dependence. “Abandoning coal is not a symbol, but an engineering task requiring calculation and time,” notes Travkin. With rational use and the implementation of CO₂ capture technologies, coal can become an element of a sustainable energy transition.
